Fraudulent Email Alert – December 1, 2016

The Florida Bar warns its members about a fraudulent email with the subject “The Office of The State Attorney Complaint” that isbeing distributed.

The Bar, through a website announcement, a Florida Bar News article and various social media posts, advised members not to click on any links contained within the email and to delete it immediately. It is suspected that this email contains a link to a malicious software known as Ransomware.

The fraudulent email informs members that “a complaint has been filed against your business” and asks the recipient to click on a link to review the complaint.

Additionally, members are reminded that The Florida Bar Practice Resource Institute (PRI) has posted tips and links to other resources for Florida Bar members to use to protect their computers from malware. The information on the PRI webpage will be updated frequently with additional resources related to cybersecurity.

It appears that similar fraudulent emails were sent to New York attorneys, promptingNew York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman to issue an alert.

If you open an attachment or click a link within an email that you suspect is malicious, contact your technical support person or help desk immediately.
