This week, FloridaBarNews.TV spotlights The Florida Bar Foundation’s allocation of up to $500,000 to support Florida legal aid organizations in the wake of Hurricane Irma. The funds, which come from Florida’s share of a settlement between Bank of America and the U.S. Department of Justice, will help Florida legal aid organizations that suffered infrastructure damage or equipment losses.

DEADLINE LIKELY PUSHED BACK FOR BALLOT PROPOSALS

Following the disruption of Hurricane Irma, a panel on Monday [Sept. 25] recommended that the Florida Constitution Revision Commission give residents more time to file proposed constitutional amendments. The commission’s Rules and Administration Committee voted unanimously to recommend an extension to Oct. 6 of the filing deadline for proposed amendments from the public, replacing a prior recommendation of a Sept. 22 deadline. The deadline extensions will have to be approved by the full commission, which meets next Monday [Oct. 2] in Tallahassee.

20TH CIRCUIT STATE ATTORNEY’S OFFICE ACTIVATES HURRICANE RESPONSE TEAM FOLLOWING IRMA

Two weeks after Hurricane Irma ravaged Southwest Florida, the State Attorney’s Office 20th Judicial Circuit announced Monday [Sept. 25] it has activated its Hurricane Response Team to target storm-related crimes. A team of prosecutors and staff will focus on cases involving contractors working without a license during a state of emergency (a felony) and looting and burglarizing during and after the storm.

A DIVORCE COURT JUDGE IS FRONT RUNNER FOR U.S. ATTORNEY IN MIAMI

A divorce court judge with no federal law enforcement experience is emerging as the front runner for the U.S. attorney’s position in South Florida. Thanks to the influence of Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Ariana Fajardo Orshan has surfaced as the top candidate for the coveted position. Fajardo worked for the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office after graduating from Nova Southeastern law school, but she has devoted most of her career to family legal matters.

‘PAIN & GAIN’ MURDERER FROM MIAMI GETS NEW CHANCE TO AVOID EXECUTION

A Miami man sent to Death Row for the dismemberment murder of a Golden Beach couple in 1995 is getting a new sentencing hearing. The Florida Supreme Court last week tossed out the death sentence for Noel Doorbal, one of the notorious Sun Gym crew whose story was made into the movie “Pain & Gain.”

PASS RATE FOR FLORIDA’S BAR EXAM INCREASES WITH SOUTH FLORIDA SCHOOLS LEADING PACK

The Florida Board of Bar Examiners recently announced the latest group of lawyers who have qualified for admission to The Florida Bar. The Florida Supreme Court approved 1,553 candidates for admission. Formal induction ceremonies to swear in new attorneys will be held Oct. 4. Miami-based Florida International University College of Law had the highest pass rate with 87.8 percent, followed by University of Miami School of Law at 84.2 percent. Stetson University College of Law, with campuses in Tampa and Gulfport, was fifth at 76.8 percent.

REVENUE RISES NEARLY 3 PERCENT FOR GLOBAL 100 LAW FIRMS; WHICH FIRMS TOP THE LIST?

Overall revenue for law firms in the American Lawyer’s Global 100 rose just 2.8 percent in 2016, a figure that the publication views as a sign of challenging times. Total revenue was $99.3 billion, and the gain was the lowest since the Great Recession. Revenue per lawyer was essentially flat at $813,000, while profit per equity partner dropped one half of 1 percent to $1.59 million, and profit per lawyer fell slightly to $317,000.
