MEET MICHELLE SUSKAUER, FIRST FORMER PUBLIC DEFENDER TO BECOME FLORIDA BAR PRESIDENT

Incoming Florida Bar president Michelle R. Suskauer will be sworn in Friday [June 15] during the 68th Annual Florida Bar Convention in Orlando. The West Palm Beach criminal defense attorney will be the sixth female of 70 Florida Bar presidents. As she takes the reins in the wake of the #MeToo movement, she hopes to forge a legacy of inclusivity and gender equality. Suskauer sees her new position as a call to action and plans to use her platform to address issues affecting solo and small firms. Through the implementation of an array of health and wellness programs, Suskauer aims to help members who may otherwise be ashamed of asking for it.

15 LAWYERS VIE FOR POLK JUDGESHIP

Fifteen lawyers are seeking to fill the judicial vacancy on the Polk County bench created when Judge Gerald Hill II was appointed to the circuit court. Hill replaced Circuit Judge Glenn Shelby, who died in December. Among those seeking the county court post are three prosecutors, an assistant public defender and an assistant general counsel with the Florida Department of Children and Families. The 15 candidates will be interviewed next week by the 10th Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission.

JOE STELMA’S LEGAL LEGACY: COURT ADMINISTRATOR REFLECTS AS HE APPROACHES 50 YEARS OF SERVICE

Fourth Judicial Circuit Trial Court Administrator Joe Stelma is the recipient of the Jacksonville Bar Association’s 2018 Liberty Bell Award. It is presented each year to someone who is not an attorney, but has made a significant contribution to the legal system in Northeast Florida. He and his team work daily in case flow, fiscal management, information systems and security, among other areas. Stelma started what has grown into an array of alternative justice programs for juveniles, adults and veterans suffering from addictions and for people with mental health issues. Over the years, the circuit’s drug courts have been recognized as national model programs.

GOVERNOR ORDERS JUDICIAL NOMINATION PROCESS SUSPENDED

After completing interviews of five applicants and beginning to interview the sixth, the Fourth Judicial Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission suspended its work Monday [June 11] on the direction of Gov. Rick Scott’s office. Second Judicial Circuit Judge Charles Dodson lifted the stay on a motion he granted last week that ordered Scott to suspend the nomination and appointment process to replace Circuit Judge Robert Foster, who is resigning his seat on the bench. Scott filed an appeal of Dodson’s ruling with the First District Court of Appeal. The governor’s office will seek to reinstate the stay as part of the appellate process.

‘A LIFELONG DREAM:’ FORMER PROSECUTOR ANGELA MASON SWORN IN AS NEWEST OKALOOSA COUNTY JUDGE

Surrounded by family and friends, former Assistant State Attorney Angela Mason achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a judge on Monday [June 11] at her swearing-in ceremony at the Okaloosa County Courthouse. Mason becomes the newest judge to join the ranks of the First Judicial Circuit of Florida. She fills the seat vacated by T. Patterson Maney, who stepped down in May after 29 years at the bench.
