The Daily News Summary features Florida Bar News stories on a special bar committee appointed by Bar President John Stewart that will offer nonpartisan research and advice to the Legislature and a change made by the Supreme Court to improve confidentiality protections for people reporting child abuse.  The change incorporates by reference an amendment to F.S. Chap. 39, banning releasing “identifying information with respect to” the person reporting such abuse.

GREYHOUND RACING SUPPORTERS SUE TO OVERTURN AMENDMENT 13

A group of greyhound kennel owners and breeders is suing the state of Florida to block the enforcement of Amendment 13, the ban on commercial dog racing passed by voters last fall. The suit, filed late last week in U.S. District Court, names Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Secretary of State Laurel Lee and state Attorney General Ashley Moody, claiming the amendment is unconstitutional because it deprives people working in the greyhound racing industry of their livelihoods without due process.

FLORIDA JUSTICES TO TAKE UP INSURANCE PAYMENT FIGHT

In a case stemming from Hurricane Frances in 2004, the Florida Supreme Court has agreed to take up a dispute about whether the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance Corp. could be required to pay for lost rental income from damaged apartment buildings.  Justices issued an order Friday [Oct. 4] saying they will hear an appeal by Citizens of a ruling by the 5th District Court of Appeal in the Brevard County case.

ROBERT KRAFT SUES STATE ATTORNEY IN PALM BEACH COUNTY OVER PUBLIC RECORDS

On Oct. 1 attorneys for New England Patriot’s owner Robert Kraft filed a lawsuit against the Palm Beach County state attorney, alleging the office has failed to turn over public records related to his case. A letter between the state attorney’s office and Kraft’s legal team shows prosecutors say that because the case is open and pending prosecution, only material that has been provided to the defendant as part of discovery constitutes a public record subject to disclosure. Attorneys for Kraft dispute that, claiming that these are public records to which he is entitled.
