MISSION STATEMENT

To foster a more diverse legal work force truly inclusive of the diverse communities of Sarasota County by:

•Establishing dialogue and consciousness among the bar members concerning the benefits of inclusion and the full scope of diversity;

•Educating the public about our diversity programs and efforts to recruit and retain attorneys that exemplify diversity; and

•Actively seek collaboration with local communities and organizations comprised of diverse racial, gender, age, ethnic, national, disability and sexual orientation backgrounds in support of our mission of equity and harmony.

WHY WE NEED A COUNCIL FOR DIVERSITY& INCLUSION

Statement by Chief Judge Charles E. Williams

For Sarasota to live up to its reputation as a world class destination for all those who come here it must reflect the world’s diversity and be inclusive.  The local legal community is no exception to this.  Although there are those who feel that diversity and inclusion is not important, those with a diverse background who seek legal services in this community are going to be receptive to those firms and lawyers who are accepting and inclusive of people like themselves.  Lawyers and law firms cannot ignore this fact and need to catch up both in a business sense and a moral sense in accepting and understanding why diversity and inclusion is good for their business and for the legal profession.

Experience has taught us that this cannot be accomplished in a vacuum.  Someone or some group has to take a lead and explain to the legal community why diversity is important. We have to educate the public, at all levels, on the benefit of diversity and inclusion and also make the legal profession a reflection of the diversity in our community.

The SCBA Council for Diversity & Inclusion is tasked with that goal and gladly accepts the challenge of making the legal community and Sarasota a more diverse, inclusive and tolerant place for all those who call this community home.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT HIGHLIGHT

Liliana Ibarra, Esquire

Liliana Ibarra is the 2019 recipient of the Sarasota’s Richard R. Garland Diversity Scholarship. Liliana was born and raised in Texas, but her family moved to Michigan when she was young. From there her family migrated to Florida to work in agriculture. Liliana received her bachelor’s degree at the University of South Florida. After graduation, Liliana worked for two criminal defense firms in Sarasota, County where she worked on misdemeanor and felony matters as well as traffic matters.

Liliana’s interest in law led her to apply to Barry University Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law in Orlando, Florida. Because of her interest in immigration, she participated in the Immigration Clinic at Barry. Over the summer, Liliana advocated for two individuals in an asylum matter before an Immigration Judge. Her hard work paid off when the Judge granted both individuals asylum in this country.

This past summer Liliana had the opportunity to work for Goodman McGuffey, LLP handling civil litigation matters where she gained valuable experience in coverage, product liability, and construction defect matters. After completing this summer clerkship Liliana plans to return to the Sarasota legal community to practice as an attorney. She hopes to incorporate her passion for immigration matters into other fields of law. She is currently completing her final year of law school at Barry University.
