Booker Law Academy Mentoring

The SCBA Council for Diversity and Inclusion has established a mentoring program at Booker High School Law Academy, spearheaded by Judge Frederick Mercurio. The purpose of the program is to assist in retaining students in the Law Academy program, and to provide students with a mentor who can be a shining example of quality lawyers/human beings giving back to the community.

Mentor meetings take place once a week at Booker High School during students' lunch period, either 10:15-11:00 am, or 11:00 - 11:45 am. Alternatively, meetings may take place early in the school day or any time that can be agreed upon. Starting 2019-2020 school year we hope to have all law academy students assigned to a law academy class first period so they can break out from their class and meet with their mentor. We will try to be as flexible as possible, i.e. allowing a firm to mentor a student or a tag team approach with one or two lawyers mentoring the same student.

To sign up for this important opportunity, please contact Kathy Chamberlain, Director, Faces of Accomplishment, Inc., by email or phone (941) 468-7582. Kathy arranges to meet with the mentors, provides them with a thorough understanding of mentoring a high school student, and ensures compliance with Sarasota County school board policy and screening requirements.
