2020 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT HIGHLIGHT

Ms. Lucinda Louis

Lucinda Louis is the 2020 recipient of the Sarasota's Richard R. Garland Diversity Scholarship. Born to Haitian parents that migrated from Haiti to Florida, Lucinda was raised in Sarasota ever since she was three years old. After high school, Lucinda went off to the University of South Florida (USF) and obtained her bachelor's degree in Criminology.

Although Lucinda has spoken with local attorneys in Sarasota, she still wasn't sure if she wanted to pursue law. While at USF, Lucinda would further her interest in law by interning at the Hillsborough County Public Defender 13th Judicial Circuit. She watched court cases, sort through and prep old case files, and met with many attorneys. After the internship, Lucinda firmly believes that her next step in life was law school, specifically Florida A&M University College of Law in Orlando, Florida. In the summer of 2019, Lucinda obtained a paid internship with a private firm working on class actions and premise liability cases. In the premise liability case, Lucinda wrote a response to a motion to dismiss and convinced a judge, despite other jurisdiction and precedent case law, to side in her favor.

This past summer was different for Lucinda. Initially, she had two interviews with prospective firms, but due to COVID-19, it was canceled. But when one door closes, another one opens, and Lucinda was allowed to intern with the in-house counsel of Sarasota Memorial Hospital for their Semester in Practice program. At Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH), Lucinda drafted memorandums about corrective action guidelines for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) violation made by SMH employees and donor name-sharing. After completing the Semester in Practice, Lucinda plans to return to the Sarasota legal community after graduation. She is currently in her final year of law school at Florida A&M University. She hopes to practice in the area of Criminal Law, Property Law, or Immigration Law.
